ENGLISH VERSION

The Ambronay Festival opened with a concert by the vocal and instrumental company La Tempête, conducted by Simon-Pierre Bestion, entitled “Requiem imaginaire pour Charles Quint”. The ensemble, comprising sixteen singers and nineteen instrumentalists, literally filled the church of the Benedictine abbey – the large complex of buildings that has become the home of the Centre Culturel de Rencontre (CCR), the de facto headquarters of historically informed performance practice with its tradition of warmly welcoming artists and audiences – with voices and sounds.

Drawing inspiration from the legend of the dress rehearsal for his own funeral, which the emperor had ordered following his abdication, the conductor assembled a programme of music of Iberian origin, interspersed with compositions by Franco-Flemish composers, with the aim of creating a Renaissance Iberian soundscape, including some musical echoes of the communities that had coexisted on the Peninsula prior to the Reconquista.

The powerful acoustic impact of this programme stemmed from Bestion’s adaptation of music of various kinds, with the aim of creating an enveloping and immersive soundscape, with the singers frequently moving around the nave of the church and the “alta cappella” of two little groups of wind players positioned in the side aisles, to the right and left of the audience.

In the interview, the group’s founder discusses his research and his vision for musical performance, describing the historical context surrounding the creation of the programme presented at Ambronay. The conversation and the musical examples were recorded during rehearsals for the concert that took place on 11 September in the abbey church.
